Bill Cunliffe, associate professor of music, this year won a Grammy for his arrangement of “West Side Story Medley” on the CD "Resonance Big Band Plays Tribute to Oscar Peterson."

Psychologist Allen W. Gottfried, the father of the Fullerton Longitudinal Study, is being recognized as the recipient of the 2010 Western Psychological Association Teaching Award.

Howard Wang, associate vice president for student affairs, has been named a “Pillar of the Profession” by NASPA, a Washington D.C.-based organization of student affairs administrators.

Best Article of the Year

Historian Volker Janssen, will be recognized with the Organization of American Historians’ Binkley-Stephenson Award, which hails the Journal of American History’s best essay of the year.

Double Time

On the heels of winning the 2010 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship, the Titans Dance Team has won a second national title.


Students last year spent 1.3 million hours participating in community service. Their deeds helped CSUF earn — for the third consecutive year — a place on the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

Allison Varzally’s book, “Making a Non-White America: Californians Coloring outside Ethnic Lines, 1925-1955” won the Immigration and Ethnic History Society’s 2009 Theodore Saloutos Memorial Award in American Immigration History.

Theater Majors Win Awards

Meredith Hinckley and Adam Navarro won the top two acting awards, plus a major design prize presented at the 41st annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.

Cal State Fullerton’s “Querer es Poder: 50 Examples” photo exhibit of 50 of its successful Latino alumni won a gold medal in the 2009 Council for Advancement and Support of Education Circle of Excellence Awards.

CSUF's history honor society, Theta-Pi, has won best chapter honors and its journal, the Welebaethan, has been named the best in the nation, both receiving the top awards from Phi Alpha Theta every year for nearly three decades.

Kudos for Kinesiology

Professors Robert D. Kersey, Lee Brown and Jared W. Coburn have won awards. Kersey was named "Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer" by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and Brown and Coburn were honored by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
