Fraternity Raises Record Amount for Charity

More than 300 people, including fraternity members and their parents, alumni and university staff and faculty members, attended the Las Vegas-style event.

“All the hard work paid off in the end, and now we will be able to send kids to camp,” said Andrew Lopez, chapter president and a communications major.

The chapter will donate the proceeds to the Painted Turtle Camp, founded in 1999 by Paul Newman and Page Adler. Located at Lake Hughes in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest, Painted Turtle is the sixth addition to Newman’s family of Hole in the Wall Camps for seriously ill children and is the only multi-disease camp and family care center of its kind on the West Coast.

Hole in the Wall Camps is the national fraternity’s philanthropy. “We take pride in our chapter and understand how important it is for Phi Kappa Tau as national organization to support Hole in the Wall Camps,” said Lopez, who also serves as chief communications officer for Associated Students Inc. “As our chapter continues to grow, we will continue to raise the bar for our fraternity.” Related link: http://calstate.fullerton.edu/news/Inside/2009/phi-kappa-tau-leadership-academy.html

Library Hours Expanded

Pollak Library officials have announced that beginning this week, they have extended hours to 10:30 p.m. for the north side of the first floor. The expanded hours — on Mondays through Thursdays — are only for that section of the library.

All other sections of the library, including the south side of the first floor will still close at 9 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays.

The modified hours are based upon the results of a recent online survey in which the highest student desire is for study space and access to computers. The preference for extending evening hours outweighed opening on Sundays.

“This will accommodate the need for access to study space and computers,” said Richard Pollard, university librarian. The 125 workstations in the Information and Learning Commons and the print reference collection will be available, but not the circulating collection housed in the south side of the library.

After 9 a.m. only very basic assistance by a library assistant will be available at the Information and Learning Commons counter. Community support officers, identified by their yellow uniform shirts, will be patrolling and providing building security after closure of the rest of the facility.

“This is a bare-bones response to the needs students have communicated. The library has not discovered a pot of ‘new’ money; its budget remains under the same challenges facing all campus entities,” said Pollard. “Dollars supporting extended hours are additional dollars taken from the budgets supporting purchase of information resources and staff assistance in their use.”

Appointment

Ronald E. Oliver was appointed to a one-semester term as acting chair of Education Leadership effective Aug. 20.

Emerita Named

President Milton A. Gordon conferred the title of emeritus director of information services in University Advancement to Karen Bushman. Subjects Sought for Project on Promoting Healthy Lifestyles in College Students

Health science and psychology faculty members, along with the Center for the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention, are conducting the first interdisciplinary study to understand college students’ lifestyle choices and relationship to their physical and mental health.

As participation by a broad representative sample of college students is the key element for this project, the research team seeks faculty support by allowing surveys to be distributed to students in the classes.

The Centers for Disease Control-funded research aims to examine college students’ lifestyle choices, including food choices, alcohol use, physical activity, sleep habits and stress management, which can impact academic performance and have lifelong health implications.

Research findings will help inform health educators and researchers about college students’ dietary patterns and contributing factors to decision making of other lifestyle choices, say researchers Jie W. Weiss, associate professor of health science, and Emily Cheng, lecturer in psychology. The information, they add, is an important first step for the development of more tailored health promotion and intervention programs for college students.

Data collection began last spring and continues this fall. Faculty willing to participate can schedule the survey session on a day and time that is most convenient for that class. For more information or to schedule a survey, contact Weiss at 657-278-4388 or jweiss@fullerton.edu, or Cheng at 657-278-7062 or echeng@fullerton.edu.

    Compensation Calculator Available Online
The California State University Chancellor’s Office has developed a Total Compensation Calculator that permits an employee to input his or her salary and benefit information online to calculate the total CSU compensation package available to that individual. The link to the calculator is:  http://hr.fullerton.edu//hr.htm.

The site will ask employees to respond to a set of benefits and compensation-related questions. Once the employee inputs his or her information, the calculator displays the CSU contributions made to each benefit plan, the total value of benefits, the total compensation (salary + benefits), and the total benefits as a percentage of salary, says Denise Johnson of Cal State Fullerton’s Human Resources Office. The Total Compensation Calculator also provides the estimated daily value of paid time off benefits.

“Because the information entered into the calculator is employee generated, if you enter the incorrect employee group, eligibility status or benefit plan, the calculator may provide data that is incorrect,” says Johnson. “We are very excited about this new calculator as it is a way to communicate to CSU employees the entire value of the CSU compensation package.”

    Honors State Officials
The California State University has selected California Assembly Member Hector De La Torre as “Legislator of the Year” and honored California Department of Aging Director Lynn Daucher with a “Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in improving the state’s public education systems. Both awards were presented in March.

De La Torre was honored for his work in support of higher education, including authorship of legislation that made Cal Grants more accessible to older and returning students. He also authored a bill that allows older students to take high school exit exams on Saturdays.

“Assemblyman De La Torre truly deserves recognition as CSU Legislator of the Year,” said CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed. “He has authored and played an integral role in ensuring higher education and the funds to pay for it are available to everyone.”

Daucher most recently served in the California State Assembly representing the 72nd District as chair of the Committee on Aging and Long Term Care and as a member of the Budget Subcommittee on Education and the State Allocation Board. As an assembly member, Daucher authored several bills that have improved education in the state, including a law that provides greater accountability over school district budgets, and AB 1425 to give community college school districts more flexibility in hiring faculty that can better teach vocational skills. She has twice been recognized as the California School Boards Associations’ “Outstanding Legislator of the Year.”

“Director Daucher has been an active leader in California’s education systems,” said CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed. “Her role in bettering California’s community college faculty and academic structures, and addressing the state’s K-12 budget challenges is substantial.”

Deadline Set for College Financial Aid

California State University undergraduates who wish to receive financial aid for the 2007-08 academic year should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 2.

While FAFSA may be filed after March, those filing before the priority deadline increase the likelihood of receiving maximum consideration for all sources of aid, reported officials from the CSU Chancellor’s Office. Students also should ask their campuses to submit a verified grade point average (GPA) to the California Student Aid Commission by March 2 to be considered for a Cal Grant.

FAFSA forms are available online at http://www.calstate.edu/apply. While CSU discourages students from filing the paper FAFSA, it encourages families to complete the FAFSA Web Worksheet prior to filling out the FAFSA form. The worksheet is available on the U.S. Department of Education’s website at fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA needs to be filed every year a student wishes to be considered for financial aid.

Crosswalk Changes at Nutwood and Commonwealth
As construction continues on Mihaylo Hall, students, faculty and staff members have a new way to cross from College Park to the main part of campus. Effective Jan. 8, the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection at Nutwood and Commonwealth avenues has been opened so that pedestrians can cross directly over from College Park. Prior to the change and after the diagonal crossing was eliminated, pedestrians had to cross west to east along Commonwealth and then cross Nutwood south to north. The double crossing is no longer necessary.

Current signaling at the intersection has pedestrians crossing at the same time there is a green light for vehicles turning either left or right onto Nutwood from Commonwealth, so walkers are encouraged to use caution when crossing.

For more information on the construction at the intersection and other locations on campus can be found by going to http://d-c.fullerton.edu.

    Trustees Vote on 2007-08 Budget
The California State University Board of Trustees, during their Nov. 14-15 meeting, voted on an approximately $4.5 billion budget for 2007-08. Included were $3 billion from the state’s general fund and $1.3 billion from State University Fee revenue.

The budget recognizes the funding agreement under the Compact for Higher Education that includes a 4 percent or $109.7 million general operation increase, $64.2 million to fund enrollment growth of 2.5 percent (or 11,000 additional students), and $65.2 million necessary to avoid increasing student fees by 10 percent.

The budget also recommends $71.7 million to fund ongoing program priorities, such as Kindergarten through 12th grade math, science and special education teachers; nursing programs; student services initiatives; applied research; and compensation.

    Other Trustee issues

In related matters, the trustees also passed a resolutionestablishing a new fee — the CSU Educational Doctorate State University Fee — for students entering the new doctoral program.

Trustees also received the latest annual report on campus fees. The systemwide State University Fee has remained unchanged since 2005-06; however, campus-based fees have risen an average of $35, or 5.4 percent, according to the CSU. The report also included tables giving fee levels at CSU comparison public institutions.

In addition, trustees reviewed proposed changes to the CSU’s “Executive Transition” program originally established in 1992. The changes would limit the program to only those former campus presidents or system executives who intend to return to an identified position within the CSU. Under the proposed revisions, there would be no guaranteed salary level or length of transition period. Duration, duties and salary for each agreement would be negotiated by the chancellor in a practice that mirrors what other comparable institutions already follow. The changes also require each trustee receive a copy of the agreement and that it be listed as an information item on the board agenda, as well as discussed in open session.Rec Sports Hosts Flag Football game

Four Players Suspended for Misuse of Book Vouchers

Four Cal State Fullerton men's basketball players have been suspended for the first three games of the 2006-07 season due to a secondary NCAA rules violation.

Senior Bobby Brown and juniors Curtis Battles, Scott Cutley and Frank Robinson will be sidelined for their misuse of book vouchers during the spring semester.

Cal State Fullerton self-reported the violation and requested that the three-game suspensions be staggered. However, the NCAA is requiring all four players to miss the first three games unless circumstances reduce the remaining roster to fewer than seven players.

Fullerton opens the regular season at home on Nov. 10 vs. California Maritime Academy and hosts Hope International on Nov. 14 before playing at Texas-San Antonio on Nov. 22. Counting walk-ons, the Titans have 11 other players on the roster, but only one — Justin Burns — who was on the active roster last season.
