Titan Wrestling, Women’s Gymnastics Retained for Next Year
May 11, 2010
From Sports Information
The Titan intercollegiate wrestling and women’s gymnastics programs will be retained for the 2010-11 academic year as the result of generous financial support from their respective communities.
“I wish to congratulate Head Coaches Dan and Jill Hicks for their remarkable efforts in spearheading two campaigns that raised $476,356 in a very short time,” said Director of Athletics Brian Quinn. “Their passion for their sports and their student-athletes is obvious.
“All funds must be deposited with the university by Aug. 1 for the sports to continue competing in the 2010-11 seasons.”
“We had some big help at the last minute,” said Jill Hicks. “I didn't know whether we could do it … but we’re set, not permanently, but at least for one more year.”
“It has been a long year,” she said. “This has taken so much effort and been a focus so long that it hasn't yet sunk in that we made it.”
Wrestling competes in the Pac-10 Conference and women’s gymnastics competes in the Western Athletic Conference. Both sports were targeted for termination due to the ongoing fiscal crisis in the California State University system. The coaches were given the opportunity to fund their programs for next year with community support and both have met their goals and deadlines.
Fullerton sponsors 17 sports — 10 women and seven men — at the NCAA Division I level.
