Tale of Love and Defiance

Romeo and Juliet Opens April 23 in the Young Theatre

April 13, 2010

Cal State Fullerton stages “Romeo and Juliet” from April 23-May 9 in the Young Theatre of the Clayes Performing Arts Center. Kari Hayter directs Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers from dueling families who risk everything for love.

Purportedly based on a poem written about a real pair of lovers who died for one another in 1303, “Romeo and Juliet” was first performed sometime between 1594 and 1595 and has become Shakespeare’s most popular and most performed plays, inspiring other artistic endeavors, such as Berlioz’s symphony, Tchaikovsky’s overture, Prokofiev’s ballet, Zeffirelli’s film, and Bernstein and Sondheim’s “West Side Story,” according to Drew Chappell of the Theatre and Dance Department.

Tickets are available at the Clayes Performing Arts Center box office between the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour prior to performance. Tickets also are available online at www.fullerton.edu/arts/events.
