March 25, 2008

Cal State Fullerton’s student newspaper, Daily Titan, was recently honored with both national and state awards at the Associated Collegiate Press National College Newspaper Convention Feb. 28 through March 2 in San Francisco. More than 750 student journalists and their advisers from throughout the nation attended the four-day convention.

Among its honors, the Daily Titan received fourth place in best of show for daily newspapers represented at the convention and its web site placed second among all college newspapers in the nation, while the interactive element of the site placed fifth, announced Tom Clanin, news room adviser to the Daily Titan.

During the convention, the California College Media Association presented awards for its statewide competition, presenting the Cal State Fullerton publication with two second-place awards for general excellence and best overall design.

In addition,

  • Reporters Karl Zynda and Jake Kilroy shared first place in daily newspaper division’s breaking  news categories for their coverage of last year’s brush fires;
  • Stephanie Birditt, advertising director, won third place for best black and white advertisement and second place in best group promotion;
  • Ad production manager Keith Hansen won first place for best sales promotion materials; and
  • Sales staff member Steve Kendall won second place for best color ad.

“This confirms that the Daily Titan is among the best newspapers in the nation,” said Clanin. “We excel in all aspects of our print edition and with our multimedia presentation on our web site.”
