Softball Regional Title on Greatest Moments in Sports Ballot

L. A. Sports Council Conducting Annual Election

December 18, 2007

By Mel Franks

Cal State Fullerton's dramatic doubleheader sweep of previously unbeaten at home Ohio State for the championship of the 2007 NCAA Softball Regional in Columbus is one of three memorable moments on the ballot for the Los Angeles Sports Council's annual “Greatest Moments in Sports” balloting.

The Titans’ victory in the title game was selected by a media panel as one of three finalists for the Southern California Division I category, which excludes UCLA and USC events. The other two nominees are UC Irvine highlights.

Voting is now underway and will run through Jan. 10. The winners will be revealed at the Sports Council’s third annual L.A. Sports Awards dinner and show Jan. 20 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. FSN Prime Ticket will televise the event.

Fans may vote for one or more of the 18 categories but may vote only once via the website “www.lasports.org” (or link from the Cal State Fullerton website www.fullertontitans.com).

The Div. I moments are:
UC IRVINE WINS MEN'S VOLLEYBALL NATIONAL TITLE — After defeating Penn State in the semifinals, Coach John Speraw’s team captured the NCAA volleyball crown May 5 with a 3-1 victory over IPFW (Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne) in the championship match. Led by NCAA Tournament MVP Matt Webber, the Anteaters finished with the most wins in the nation in 2007 at 29-5 and set a single-season school record for victories, at Columbus, Ohio.

TITANS TAKE NCAA SOFTBALL REGIONALS — Senior Candice Baker slugged a double and two triples and pitched six innings of scoreless relief to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 10-3 victory over Ohio State May 20 for the championship of the NCAA Softball Regional Tournament at Columbus. The win completed a doubleheader sweep of the Buckeyes, who previously had not lost a home game all season, and advanced the Titans to the NCAA Super Regional Tournament.

ANTEATERS SET COLLEGE WORLD SERIES MARK — UC Irvine, making its first-ever appearance in the Division I College World Series, became the first team in CWS history to win consecutive extra-inning games, ousting Cal State Fullerton, 5-4 in a CWS record 5 hours, 40 minutes (13 innings), and Arizona State, 8-7 in 10 innings, at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. UCI finished third in the CWS and posted an overall record of 47-17-1, the most wins in the school’s Division I history (June 18-19).
