January 9, 2007
The first walls of the $41 million Student Recreation Center will go up beginning Thursday, Jan. 11.
A total of 59 tilt panel walls will be used as part of the construction of the 95,000-square-foot structure. The largest of those panels — which range in thickness from 71/4” to 15” — is 49’4” tall and weighs 221,000 pounds.
The facility, expected completed in January 2008, will feature a weight-training area and cardio-fitness room, multi-court gymnasium, indoor jogging track, multipurpose activity rooms, racquetball and sports courts, a group exercise area for spinning bike classes, a floor exercise/stretching area, climbing wall and outdoor leisure/lap swimming pool and locker/shower rooms.
The Student Recreation center will be operated as part of the Titan Student Union, under the auspices of Associated Students. Construction and operation of the recreation center is funded by student fees and revenues generated through the facility’s operations.
