Students Pick Teachers That Make a Difference in the Classroom

by Mimi Ko Cruz

Some professors are extraordinary and their reputations are touted by students for years. Inside Magazine wanted to know who students are praising these days by asking a few to tell us who stands out as their favorite teacher and why. Here are their responses.

David Bishop, senior, math major
Favorite teacher: Martin V. Bonsangue, professor of mathematics
Why: “Because I'm a math major getting ready to be a teacher, I see Dr. Bonsangue as a great example of a good teacher. He's helpful, he makes the subject entertaining and interesting. All those qualities you want a teacher to have, he possesses.”

Sophia Chang, senior, art history and anthropology major
Favorite teacher: Joanna Roche, associate professor of art
Why: “Dr. Roche is the definitive example of an art history professor. She may not be able to draw or paint, but she sure can teach. Art history is not an 'armchair' study with her, it is a process of creation and artistic passion.”

Celina Luna, grad student, anthropology
Favorite teacher: John Q. Patton, assistant professor of anthropology
Why: “The concepts that I learned in Dr. Patton's class forever shaped my perception of humanity and the evolutionary significance in human behavior as we are all driven by a biological force.”

James Olivares, junior, accounting major
Favorite teacher: Kim Tarantino, lecturer in accounting
Why: “Her use of many examples makes the hardest concepts easy to understand.”

Payal Shah, senior, biochemistry major
Favorite Teacher: Paula Hudson, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry
Why: “She makes a difficult subject like theory of quantitative chemistry very easy to understand and interesting and she's very approachable and eager to offer help.”
