March 1, 2007

The Center for the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention is completing six projects that involve serving low-income children in Santa Ana and south Fullerton, where obesity rates and risks for diabetes are among the highest in the nation.

The project outcomes are providing new information on factors contributing to obesity and new strategies for promoting healthy lifestyles and weight management in children, said Shari McMahan, center director.

The center partners with various community agencies, St. Jude Medical Center and the Orange County Department of Education in promoting breastfeeding, exercise and good nutrition, and makes obesity prevention presentations.

Last year, the center hosted a community forum on “Obesity: Awareness and Beyond” which featured representatives from the Orange County Department of Education, the Californa Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Kaiser Permanent, YMCA Orange County, Latino Health Access and Community Action Partnership of Orange County.
