Through its educational, research and service activities, the Center for Successful Aging promotes health, vitality and the reduction of frailty and disability in seniors.
It offers four programs: Senior Fitness, Balance and Mobility, Health Promotion for Older Adults and Outdoor Explorations. The center, under the direction of Debra J. Rose and C. Jessie Jones, both professor of kinesiology, focuses on conducting interdisciplinary research on issues related to healthy aging; providing student and in-service training to prepare gerontologists, health care practitioners, rehabilitative specialists and fitness leaders to work with older adults; offering a variety of health, physical, psychological and functional assessments; conducting health, fitness and rehabilitation programs; collaborating with community agencies and facilities to provide services to improve the quality of life in later years; and serving as an advocate for affecting public policy related to healthy aging.
In 2004, the center was honored by the International Council on Active Aging with its Industry Innovators Award. The award honors excellence and creativity in the health and wellness fields.
