Only Player from the Big West Selected

March 5, 2009

From Sports Information

Cal State Fullerton senior guard Josh Akognon from Petaluma has been selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 9 First Team announced today in Kansas City, MO.

Akognon is the only player from the Big West Conference included among the 240 players on 24 first- and second-team units. He is joined on the District 9 first team by John Bryant of Santa Clara, Patrick Mills of Saint Mary's and Matt Bouldin and Josh Heytvelt of Gonzaga. The second team features an entire West Coast Conference contingent in Austin Daye of Gonzaga, Nik Raivio of Portland, Dior Lowhorn of USF, Diamon Simpson of Saint Mary's and Gyno Pomare of San Diego.

Akognon made second-team All-District 15 last year when he was included with Pac-10, Mountain West and Western Athletic Conference players from Southern California, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona. The districts were realigned for 2008-09 and the teams increased from 15 to 24. All 240 players are eligible for the State Farm Coaches’ Div. I All-America teams to be announced on Apr. 4.

Akognon has been among the nation’s Top Ten scorers all season, currently averaging 23.8 points per game. He is No. 2 in three-point field goals made per game (4.21 per game) and has been in the Top 15 in free-throw percentage. He also has the longest current streak among active Division I players of making at least one three-point basket in his last 41 games. With 691 points, Akognon is 28 shy of Titan alumnus Leon Wood’s school single-season scoring record of 719 in 1983-84.
