May 19, 2009
By Pamela McLaren
More than 11,000 candidates — including 2,287 January graduates — are eligible to participate in Cal State Fullerton’s annual commencement ceremonies May 23-24.
Keynote speakers for the universitywide celebrations will be U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Jack O’Connell, state superintendent of public instruction. O’Connell, a 1973 Cal State Fullerton alumnus, will speak during the Saturday, May 23, ceremony, while Solis, an alumna of Cal Poly Pomona, addresses attendees Sunday, May 24.
Both celebrations will begin at 8 a.m. on the sports fields north of Titan Gymnasium. College and department celebrations will follow at various locations throughout campus. (Times and locations noted below.)
The ceremonies will be broadcast live on the Internet and may be viewed by visiting the university website (www.fullerton.edu). The ceremony also will be aired live on Channel 98 in Fullerton, Placentia, Santa Ana and Seal Beach.
Tickets are not needed for the all-university ceremonies at 8 a.m., but are required for admission to all college and department celebrations.
On-campus parking will be restricted to those who carpool (three persons per car) and those with disabled-person license plates or placards, due to the limited number of spaces. Off-campus parking sites include Hope University south of the campus and Troy High School and Western College of Law, both just west of the campus. Campus parking information is available on 1620-AM within a 2.5 mile radius of the campus.
Leading the campus faculty marshals will be Mohinder S. Grewal, professor of electrical engineering and the university’s Outstanding Professor Award recipient for 2008-09. Faculty marshals are: College of the Arts — Susan Hallman, professor of theatre and dance; Mihaylo College of Business and Economics — Kohli Chiranjeev, professor of marketing; College of Communications — Shelley Jenkins, lecturer in radio-TV-film, Kenneth Tom, associate professor of human communication studies, and Fred Zandpour, professor of communications; College of Education — Joann C.
