The Volunteer & Service Center received an honorable mention award for its successful blood donation drives during the 2008-09 academic year. The American Red Cross, Southern California Blood Services Region, announced the award this fall for the category of “Largest University Sponsor.”

Last year, Cal State Fullerton collected 1,080 units of blood as a collective university, said Amy Mattern, Volunteer & Service Center coordinator.

The amount includes all blood drives held on campus, including those coordinated by the Volunteer & Service Center, as well as drives hosted by the Student Health Professions Association, residence halls, student organizations, and fraternities and sororities, Mattern added.

Blood drives organized by the center’s student volunteers are held monthly throughout the school year. The next campus blood drive is Jan. 19.
