Cal State Fullerton’s Area Code Is Changing Soon!

Frequently Asked Questions

March 31, 2009

Beginning Saturday, May 30, 2009, all Fullerton campus phone numbers will have the area code 657.

If I am calling from of campus, what should I dial to reach the Fullerton campus operator or any other Fullerton campus number?

Dial 1-657-278-2011 to reach the Fullerton campus operator and dial 1-657-278 plus the current 4-digit extension to reach any other Fullerton campus number.

My campus phone number is 714-626-1234. What will it be after this change?

Your new campus phone number will be 657-278-1234. All Fullerton campus phone numbers, including fax numbers, will begin with the area code 657, followed by the prefix 278, and then the current 4-digit extension.

Will the area code on my campus supplied mobile device (BlackBerry, iPhone, cell phone, pc-card, etc.) change to 657?

No. Our cellular providers do not own any numbers within the 657 area code.

When I make a call from my office phone to a 714 number, will I be charged long distance rates?

Not if the call is to a number within the following communities: Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Costa Mes, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, La Habra, La Mirada, La Palma, Orange, Placentia, Santa Ana, Westminster and Yorba Linda. These communities are within the 714/657 area code overlay area.

How will this change affect my fax machine, copier/fax machine and the Fax Senior account?

Since all Fullerton campus numbers will change to 657-278 plus the curent 4-digit extension, you will need to reprogram your new phone number into your fax or copier/fax machine.

Your Fax Senior number also will change. So if you have your fax number listed on your email signature, you will need to update your signature with your new number. As for changing the area code sent on the cover page for your Fax Senior account, Information Technology will change the area code for all the campus Fax Senior accounts.

What if I have trouble reprogramming my fax or copier/fax machine? How do I get help?

Consult your fax manual or vendor for help reprogramming your fax machine. For help with copier/fax machines, contact Terry jarmon at ucp@fullerton.edu

Will I still be able to dial the 4-digit extension between Fullerton and Irvine campuses?

Yes.

What will happen if my family forgets to dial the new area code and dials 714 instead?

They will hear a message stating the number they dialed is no longer in service for the majority of our campus telephone numbers. However, there are around 200 campus numbers that were considered critical numbers and callers to those old 714 numbers will hear a message informing them the area code has changed and to hang up and redial the number using 657.

I have a lot of stationery and business cards with the old phone and fax numbers. Will I still be able to use them?

You may still use your old stationery and business cards by crossing out the old area code and writing in the new one or you could use them for scratch paper and order a new supply from Reprographics.

Business cards and stationery are available from Reprographics (250 business cards cost $10). Contact Terry Jarmon at reprographics@fullerton.edu for further information.

Note: Remember to inform your family, friends and emergency contacts to update their records too.
