A New Spring In Their Step

Titan Gym Remodeled and Upgraded With New Floor

Work crews have been busy since the end of the spring semester replacing the original flooring in Titan Gym. The approximately $750,000 project involved some grinding of the concrete subfloor to keep it level; adding a new moisture barrier and new sleeper boards — narrow wood strips spaced about a foot apart as in the photo above — and rubber pads that provide some spring to the floor. A new plywood layer is placed over that and then the new top layer of maple, said Jim Corbett, assistant director of programs and projects in physical plant. The maple flooring will be sanded and blemishes filled, several coats of sealer added, lines and Titan logo will be painted on the floor and a finish sealer completes the flooring. As part of the project, new bleachers will replaced the original bleachers on the east and west sides of the 43-year-old facility.
