Alumnus Tim Holland recounts the 1978 Titans basketball team who will always be remembered as the cinderella team dubbed "Cal State Who?" for their improbable ride to the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament.

What a wild, exciting time it was to follow our Titan basketball team to the Final 8 in the nation just 29 years ago. I was an avid fan and one of Bill Harvey’s Titan Hellraisers, so following the Titans in the NCAA tournament was a necessity.

As in all the games, our Titans were completely overmatched and battling some of the premier players in the country. In Arizona we beat University of San Francisco and the University of New Mexico in the first round. The next week it was off to battle Arkansas at, of all places, the University of New Mexico. They weren’t too glad to see us, as we had just eliminated their squad the week before.
Our fraternity brothers allowed us to sleep in their basement but really weren’t up to speaking to the weird Californians.

Again in the game the Titans were overmatched, but came on strong at the end. In every game the Titans fell behind but somehow rallied for victory. There we were in the last minute of the game, ready to tie the score, when “the foul heard around the world” occurred. Anderson was fouled driving to the basketball hoop. A slap of his arm so loud that we all heard it from our seats 20 to 30 rows up. No call was made and the Razorbacks controlled the ball, scored, and went on to victory.

I have been attending Titan basketball games for more than 30 years and to this day I have never heard such a foul again.

Dentist Traces Romance to Crawdad Dissection

Miyoung Fields

Miyoung Field does her homework on campus in the 1970s. as her future husband, Douglas, takes the photo.

I have great memories of my time at CSUF. I transferred there from Saddleback College as a junior. I was a biology major with aspirations of getting into dental school after getting my B.A. in biology at CSUF.

In my first class there in Fall 1976, I met my future wife, Miyoung, over a lab table in zoology. We were dissecting a crawdad. For the next three years we dated while attending classes. Our favorite lunch spot was in the basement of the Science building (now known as McCarthy Hall). The basement was known then as “the Italian Underground” because they had a great deli down there. Helen made the best submarine sandwiches and would always give us a happy greeting. We had many dates at the University Center bowling alley and even joined a bowling team there.

We both graduated with B.A.s in biology May 1979 and married a month later. By the way, with the help of Dr. Miles McCarthy and his fantastic pre-professional committee, I did manage to get into UCLA School of Dentistry and now almost 30 years later my wife and I run a successful dental practice that was made possible partly by what started 30 years prior at California State University, Fullerton!
