JPL Invention Challenge

print

Oct. 30, 2004 :: No. 87

What: Nineteen teams of aspiring middle and high school engineers will vie next month in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory 2003 Invention Challenge regional competition at Cal State Fullerton.

When: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. (Competition starts at 11:30 a.m.)

Where: Lawn west of the Engineering Building

Challenge: The mission is to design and build a glider that when launched from the officially supplied launcher, flies through the air, makes a right-hand turn and lands on a target 40 feet away.

Background: Cal State Fullerton’s Mathematics, Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) chapter will host the event. Cal State Fullerton and USC were chosen by JPL as the two Southern California competition sites. Winners in this year’s Invention Challenge, the Wright Turn Glider Contest, will compete in the finals Dec. 5 at JPL in Pasadena. Competitors coming to Fullerton will include students from Orange County schools, as well as those from Lake Elsinore, Lakewood, Hawaiian Gardens, Carson, Hacienda Heights and Venice. Teams will consist of four to seven students each. Four engineers from Boeing, including CSUF engineering alumnus Victor Vega, will assist with the competition.
