Colleges Celebrate

Colleges of the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences Sponsor Weeklong Festivities

The colleges of Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences are celebrating their respective disciplines this week with a selection of events and activities, including the 79th Annual Conference for the Southwestern Anthropological Association April 11-12.

The two-day conference will offer more than dozen sessions on topics ranging from AIDS to order and disorder in religion, evolution, race, class and gender. Keynote speaker is historian Elizabeth Pollard, who specializes in Roman and Greek civilizations.

Other events planned this week include:

April 7

  • Noon : Musicologist Stan Breckenridge, lecturer of Afro-Ethnic Studies, will perform with jazz singer Nelly Maximous in Titan Theater in the Titan Student Union. Breckenridge recently released his fifth CD, "This is My Song."

  • 3 p.m. : James R. Hofmann, chair of liberal studies, will discuss "The New Creationism: Evolution and Intelligent Design" in the Titan Theater of the Titan Student Union.

April 8

  • 11 a.m. : "Cultural Day," featuring the student clubs and organizations from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Quad.

  • 3 p.m. : An exhibit of PRINTS from Cal State Fullerton's Collection opens and continues through May 8. A public reception will be held at 3 p.m. April 12 at 3 p.m. Main Gallery

  • 5:30 p.m. : Artist David Michael Lee will present a guest lecture in Room 113 of the Visual Arts Center.

  • 7 p.m. : Screening and discussion of the 2007 Sean Penn-directed film, "Into the Wild," in Room 123 of the Humanities-Social Sciences Building.

April 9

  • 11 a.m.-1 p.m. : A special performance by Countless Thousands will highlight the College of the Arts Inter-Club Council Resource Faire & Concert in the Quad.

  • 1 p.m. : A faculty panel will discuss "What is an American in the 21st Century" in Room 112 of the Humanities-Social Sciences Building.

April 10

  • 12:15 p.m. : The Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band will perform in front of the Humanities-Social Sciences Building.

  • 5:30 p.m. : Lecture by artist Carol Wells in Room 113 of the Visual Arts Center.

April 11

  • 11 a.m. : Solo music competition in the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center.

April 11-12

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. : The 79th Annual Conference for the Southwestern Anthropological Association in the Titan Student Union. Registration is required.
