Anna Deavere Smith to Launch Women’s History Month
At Cal State Fullerton

Who: Actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith will give the keynote address March 1 to open a series of discussions, music and theater performances, films and lectures in celebration of Women’s History Month at Cal State Fullerton.
   
What: “Intersections in History: Gender, Race, Performance” is the theme of this year’s celebration. “We have lined up a wonderful calendar of events to celebrate women in politics, art, film, literature, music and theater,” said Renae Bredin, coordinator and associate professor of women’s studies. “Although Women’s History Month is only one month of the year, the idea is to encourage thought and discussion on issues pertinent to women throughout the rest of the year.”
   
Where/When: Various campus locations, beginning March 1
   
Cost: Open to the public free of charge
   
March 1: 1-2:30 p.m. Anna Deavere Smith lecture. Named “The Most Exciting Individual in American Theater” by Newsweek in 1993, Smith currently plays National Security Advisor Nancy McNally on NBC’s The West Wing.

2:30-3:15 p.m. Book Signing & Reception. Smith will sign copies of her books, which will be available for purchase, including “Twilight: Los Angeles 1992.” Titan Pavilion, Titan Student Union
   
March 3: 1:30-2:30 p.m. CSUF Women Artists Reception for a monthlong exhibit featuring student artists. East Gallery, Pollak Library

1:30-3 p.m. “Tea for the Fever” performance by Stacy Dyson, spoken-word artist. Room 130, Pollak Library

Noon-1 p.m. “Oh My Papa” lecture by Edythe Krampe, lecturer in sociology, about her childhood relationship with her father.

March 8: 1:30-2 p.m. “Women, Power & Social Justice.” International Women’s Day panel discussion with Gloria Bogdan, lecturer in Afro-ethnic studies; Nino Kurthalia, a visiting scholar from the Republic of Georgia; and Khanum Shaikh, lecturer in women’s studies and doctoral student at UCLA.

2-2:30 p.m. “Women in Black Protest” to acknowledge women who have been raped, murdered, tortured or have disappeared. Participants are invited to dress in black. Quad
   
March 9: Noon-1 p.m. “Latina Women in Hollywood” lecture by Nancy De Los Santos, author, producer and director of the documentary “The Bronze Screen: 100 Years of the Latino Image in Hollywood Cinema.” Room 205, University Hall
   
March 10: Noon-1 p.m. “Women’s Reflections in Prison” lecture by Rosemary Kane, instructor at Orange County Jail. Kane will read poetry by female prisoners. Room 205, University Hall
   
March 11: 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. “Scholarship on Women & Gender Conference” featuring papers, panels and presentations by Cal State Fullerton faculty members.

March 13-14: Noon-8 p.m. Saturday, noon-4 p.m. Sunday “Hearing Voices: Enlisting the Future” music festival featuring guest lectures, electro-acoustic listening rooms and concerts of works by women composers. Recital Hall, Performing Arts Center
   
March 15: 1-2:30 p.m. “Gender, Performance and the New Soviet Woman” lecture by Roshanna Sylvester, assistant professor of history at DePaul University.

March 16: 7-9 p.m. “The Pill” lecture by Natalie Fousekis, assistant professor of history. Room 205, University Hall
   
March 17: Noon-1 p.m. “The Plight of Women and Girls in Nepal” lecture by Jeffrey Kottler, chair and professor of counseling.

March 22: 7-8:30 p.m. “Salt of the Earth” documentary screening and lecture by Hilarie Kelly, assistant professor of anthropology. Location TBA
   
March 23: 10 a.m.-noon “Family, Food and Culture with Firoozeh Dumas.” Dumas’ book, “Funny in Farsi: Growing Up Iranian in America,” was chosen for this year’s Orange County Reads One Book campaign. She will talk about the book, sign copies and take questions from the audience.
