Stem Cell Symposium

April 6 Event Focuses on Limb Regeneration

What:

Cal State Fullerton's Bridges to Stem Cell Research Program hosts an April 6 Stem Cell Symposium focusing on limb regeneration. The event features guest speakers from USC and UC Irvine stem cell research centers and CSUF Bridges scholars who will present their research projects. The symposium is free and open to the public.

When:

Friday, April 6
10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Where:

Cal State Fullerton, Steven G. Mihaylo Hall, Room 1506
800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton 92831

10 a.m.  Francesca Mariani, assistant professor of cell and neurobiology, Keck School of Medicine, Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC, will discuss “Proximal to Distal Patterning During Limb Development and Regeneration.” Her research topics include developmental biology, stem cell biology, cell death, and human and mammalian genetics.

11:30 a.m. David M. Gardiner, professor, Department of Developmental & Cell Biology, School of Biological Sciences at UC Irvine, will present “Nerve Signaling Regulates the Early Events of Limb Regeneration.” Gardiner's research interests include limb regeneration, stem cells and regenerative engineering.

Student Presentations:

11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Current and former Bridges scholars will present their poster research projects. All of the scholars presenting are senior biological science majors, listed below with their concentrations and cities of residence:

  • Syed “Nawas” Ahmed of Orange, molecular biology and biotechnology
  • Stephanie Dreikorn of Chino, cell and developmental biology
  • Nazaneen Farahani of Norwalk, molecular biology and biotechnology
  • Reza Ghasemian of Mission Viejo, molecular biology and biotechnology
  • Brittany Greer of Mission Viejo, cell and developmental biology
  • Brian McFadden of Yorba Linda, molecular biology and biotechnology, also majoring in psychology
  • Cuong “Jeff” Nguyen of Buena Park, molecular biology and biotechnology
  • Pierre Samson of Irvine, molecular biology and biotechnology
  • Andrew Yale of Fullerton, cell and developmental biology

Why:

“The symposium brings experts in the field of stem cell research and regenerative medicine to campus to share their knowledge with students interested in this field of scientific study,” explained Nilay Patel, CSUF assistant professor of biological science. “It also provides a forum for current and former CSUF Bridges to Stem Cell Research scholars to discuss their research and internship experiences, and share their accomplishments with students interested in joining our program.”

Background:

The Bridges to Stem Cell Research Program is a 14-month program that focuses on training skilled stem cell researchers. Each year, up to 10 students are selected to be Stem Cell Scholars. The symposium is funded as part of a $1.28 million, three-year California Institute for Regenerative Medicine grant that was awarded to Patel in 2009.
