Programs Promoting Student Success
The following is a list of some of Cal State Fullerton’s outreach programs that aid minority and low-income college students, elementary and high school students and parents in surrounding areas:
- America Reads and Counts: a program for middle school students from low-income areas in Anaheim, Fullerton, Orange and Placentia that offers mentoring, reading and math tutoring services.
- CSUF Bridges: a program that awards scholarships for graduate students entering doctoral programs in chemistry, biochemistry or biological science.
- Early Academic Outreach: a motivational and academic enrichment program for middle school students from low-income communities in Orange County.
- ENLACE: a six-week residential program that facilitates transition into higher education by enabling participants to complete remedial work in math and English and participate in a “leadership track” that prepares them for leadership positions in student organizations. The program is specifically designed for culturally diverse and first-generation college students who have been admitted to the university on a provisional basis.
- EOP Admissions: a program that provides access to students from low-income first generation backgrounds who need support services to succeed in college.
- Guardian Scholars: a program supporting students exiting the foster care system with financial assistance, housing, mentoring and academic and career advisement.
- Jumpstart Fullerton: a nationwide early childhood education program that pairs college students with preschool pupils struggling in Head Start or other classes.
- Kids to College: an outreach program that brings awareness about higher education and college financing options to sixth-graders as part of their school curriculum.
- Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation: a program that aims to double the number of students from underrepresented ethnic groups who graduate with degrees in the sciences, engineering or math.
- Mathematics Intensive Summer Session: a four-week campus residential math education program open to underrepresented female high school students designed to increase the numbers of women in math-related fields.
- Mentoring Network Program for Black Student Success: a program designed to increase the number of African-American students enrolling at CSUF through high school mentoring sessions and community leader mentor forums.
- Minority Access to Research Careers: a program providing training to honors undergraduate students in underrepresented ethnic groups for scientific research.
- Minority Health International Research Training: a program that sends students abroad to study and encourage cooperation between foreign and U.S. scientists.
- Orange County AmeriCorps Alliance: a collaborative project designed to provide after-school programming for elementary through high school students.
- Peer Group Program: a program that helps first-year Latino students achieve academic and personal success.
- Project SHINE: a national service-learning initiative that builds partnerships among community colleges, universities and community-based organizations to provide immigrants, refugees and college students with English and citizenship classes.
- Research Experience for Undergraduates: a 10-week science research program for underrepresented ethnic groups, women and those with disabilities.
- Ronald E. McNair Scholars: a program that prepares economically disadvantaged and traditionally underrepresented students for doctoral studies.
- Titan Choices: a pre-collegiate initiative designed to promote higher education to 9th -through 12th-grade students through a series of workshops and activities such as motivational and academic presentations, unofficial transcript evaluation, college application workshops and campus tours. Participants are from low-income communities in Orange County where at least 50 percent of the student population is eligible for free or reduced lunch.
- Upward Bound: a yearlong program for low-income, underrepresented 10th- through 12-graders. The program aims to prepare participants for college, focusing on academic achievement, career development, financial aid assistance and exposure to the various opportunities available to students at college campuses.
