Titan Athletics Director Brian Quinn was honored last week with the Astroturf Div. I, West Region, Athletics Director of the Year Award for 2006-07 at the 42nd annual convention of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in Orlando, Fla.

Quinn was one of 29 recipients divided into four geographic regions and seven categories separating football and non-football schools, as well as NCAA, NAIA and community college divisions. The award is based upon commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding communities.

Quinn is in his sixth year at Fullerton, where he has overseen the department’s successful efforts to recover from a state fiscal crisis, improve the overall student-athlete academic performance and remodel of Titan Gym.  Cal State Fullerton student-athletes currently mirror the student body in graduation rate and CSF has been acknowledged for its “Outstanding Degree Completion Program” for 2005-06 by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.  The department also recently received a 10-year re-certification from the NCAA.

From Orlando, Quinn headed to Omaha, Neb., where he is assisting in the administration of the Men’s College World Series as a member of the Div. I baseball committee. He is the current chair of the west regional advisory committee for the NCAA baseball committee and a member of both the Div. I baseball issues subcommittee and the Div. I umpires subcommittee.

Quinn has seen the Titans’ baseball team advance to Omaha on three occasions during his tenure, bringing home the NCAA championship in 2004 and a pair of third-place finishes in 2003 and 2006.  The women’s soccer team has advanced beyond the first round in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments and both the men’s and women’s basketball programs have recently made substantial improvement with the men winning 20 or more games in two of the last three seasons including a pair of NIT road victories.  The softball team last month at Ohio State won its first NCAA Regional Tournament since 1995.

Quinn came to Fullerton from Loyola Marymount, where he chaired the West Coast Conference Athletics Directors Association and the NCAA men’s volleyball committee. He also has served on the board of directors for USA volleyball.

A hall of fame inductee at both the high school and college level, Quinn played basketball and baseball at LMU.  He also was a member of the Balboa Bay Club national championship volleyball team and remains an avid beach volleyball player. He received his master’s degree from Long Beach State.
