Background: |
The Titans won their fourth NCAA National
Championship (1979, 1984, 1995 and 2004) by winning the College
World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. They defeated the University
of Texas and former Coach Augie Garrido, two games to none,
in the best-of-three championship series with victories by
the scores of 6-4 and 3-2.
Fullerton won 32 of its final 38 games this season to compile
an overall record of 47-22 after a 15-16 start. The Titans
posted their best Big West Conference record ever at 19-2
to win the championship by five games over Long Beach State.
The Titans then hosted and won a Regional Tournament (June
4-6) and a Super Regional Tournament (June 12-13) at Goodwin
Field to qualify for the CWS, where they won their bracket
with two wins over South Carolina and one over Miami.
In the finals, standout pitchers Ricky Romero (14-4) and
Jason Windsor (13-4) were credited with come-from-behind victories
over the top-seeded Longhorns. Each earned a berth on the
All-College World Series team along with designated hitter
Felipe Garcia. With two complete game victories and a save,
Windsor was a landslide selection as the Most Outstanding
Player. The national title was the first for eighth-year head
coach Horton, who played for the Titans in 1975 and 1976 and
was an assistant to Garrido from 1991 through 1996. |
