Paying Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

What: Cal State Fullerton’s Department of Afro-Ethnic Studies is sponsoring a “Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration” to celebrate the life of the late civil rights leader.
   
When: Friday, Jan. 30, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
   
Where: Portola Pavilion A, Titan Student Union
   
Program:

Program: 6:30 p.m. – Reception

7 p.m. – CSUF President Milton A. Gordon to introduce keynote speaker Rev. John McReynolds of 2nd Baptist Church in Santa Ana, who will speak on the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

Following McReynolds’ address, students from the Afro-ethnic studies program will make remarks. Graduate student Doug Wooley will speak on Rosa Parks and the beginnings of the civil rights movement; senior John Russo will speak on the application of King’s dream to today’s society, and senior Joanna Norton will present a slide show in conjunction with the speeches.

A performance by the Afro-Ethnic Community Ensemble will conclude the evening.

   
Cost: The event is open to the public free of charge.
   
Quote: “Academic institutions and consortiums provide an environment that is rooted in the very core of Dr. King's “I Have a Dream” speech,” said Stan Breckenridge, lecturer in Afro-ethnic studies. “This event will celebrate his dream of equality for all on a number of different layers, such as ethnicity, nationality, gender, socioeconomic, religious and academic disciplines.”
