| Background: |
For more than three decades, Dees, a lawyer,
has been active in civil rights litigation, filing multimillion-dollar
lawsuits against the Ku Klux Klan and other organizations in
civil rights-related cases. In 1971, he and Joseph J. Levine
Jr. founded the Southern Poverty Law Center. He later founded
Klanwatch, in response to a resurgence in organized racist activity.
Dees has devoted his time to suing violent white supremacy groups
and developing ideas for Teaching Tolerance, the center’s
education project. In addition to serving as chief trial counsel
for the center, Dees has authored several books, including Hate
on Trial: The Case Against America’s Most Dangerous Neo-Nazi,
which chronicles the trial and the $12.5 million judgment against
white supremacist Tom Metzger and his White Aryan Resistance
group for their involvement in the beating death of a young
black student in Oregon. |
