Egg Drop Competition

The egg drop – a competition in which high school students design a protective package to, hopefully, keep eggs from breaking when tossed off the roof of the Humanities-Social Science Building – is just one of the events scheduled for MESA Day Feb. 19.

What: More than 350 Orange County high school students will visit Cal State Fullerton for a day of science and engineering competitions, including the egg drop event, during MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Day.

When: 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19

Where: Most activities will take place in the Engineering and Computer Science Quad.

Events: Competitions include the popular packaged egg event, in which students design a protective package that will keep eggs from breaking when dropped from the roof of a campus building. Other events include crystal growing, balsa wood bridge testing, glider fly-off, Web design and remote-control car demonstrations. (See schedule of events that follows.)

Background: Cal State Fullerton’s MESA chapter is part of a statewide program designed to help educationally disadvantaged students to excel in math and science. More than 90 MESA centers throughout California provide services to more than 30,000 students from elementary through university levels. Among MESA high-school seniors, 85 percent go on to attend college. Two years ago, the statewide MESA program received one of the $100,000 Innovations in Government Awards from Harvard’s Institute for Government Innovation.
