Background:

Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Chuck Tumlinson, consistently receives high scores and acclaim at major west coast jazz festivals. They have been featured on a live radio broadcast across North America as part of the Playboy Jazz Festival, and in 1991 and 1992 won the Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival competing against groups from 50 colleges and universities in seven western states. Jazz Ensemble I has performed, by invitation, at many leading Southern California festivals and events. They have produced four award-winning recordings and are currently at work on a fifth.

Chuck Tumlinson joined California State University, Fullerton in 2001 as director of the jazz program. Since his arrival, the Jazz Ensemble has appeared at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference, as part of “Autumn Eve” a tribute to Woody Herman on October 20, 2000 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood and with winning results at the 2004 Reno Jazz Festival. Tumlinson has been featured soloist at several national conventions and has appeared as soloist, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the country.

Rich Perry is a widely experienced tenor saxophonist who has been living and performing in New York City since 1976. He regularly performs with New York’s Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. Currently, he is a member of Rufus Reid Quintet, the George Mraz Quartet, with Richie Beirach and Billy Hart, the Dave Scott Quintet, and the John Fedchock New York Big Band. Perry has recorded 10 CDs for Steeplechase label. His most recent, At Eastman, is an exciting concert performance recorded at the Eastman School of Music, with Harold Danko and Clay Jenkins.

Dave Scott is an award winning trumpet player with a wide range of professional experience. Currently residing in New York, Dave has been composing for and performing with his own jazz quintet. His newest CD was just released on the Steeplechase label. He performed with Kim Richmond, Clay Jenkins and Gerry Mulligan bands.

Esperanza High School’s Jazz Ensemble I hails from the Placentia/Yorba Linda District and under the direction of Wayne Nelson, is one of Southern California’s top high school jazz ensembles.
