Program: A CHEEVER EVENING is an adaptation of seventeen of John Cheever’s most funny and moving stories. Cheever is considered a master chronicler of America’s post-war angst and alienation, and how it affected a burgeoning suburban class. A.R. Gurney uses Cheever’s stories to explore the affairs of the 1950’s WASPs who once felt in the majority, but soon found themselves in the twilight of their power and at the mercy of a changing world. Set in Westchester and Wellfleet, Gurney has expertly weaved together choice moments from Cheever’s stories of 50’s and 60’s alienation and regret. Seen through the lens of A.R. Gurney’s dramatic sensibilities, Cheever’s stories come together to create a resonant portrait – that of a culture which, while teetering on the brink of extinction, combats loss with humor, wit and feeling. The ensemble includes Lukas Bailey, Tim Banning, Misty Coy, Matt Frazier, Chris Goss, Amber Kenny, Stephen Kline, Hilary Pingle, Amanda Restivo, and Stella Tryon. Rachel Giles is the Set Designer, Ana Marie Salamat is the Costume Designer, Jason Uchita is the Lighting Desinger, Kendra Curtis is the Make-Up Designer, and John Fisher is the Sound Designer.
