December 15, 2003

Who: PAIR (Professional Artists in Residence) Celebrity Series presents:

What: FLY Dance Company

When: 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 (Orange County debut)

Where: Plummer Auditorium, 201 E. Chapman Ave., Fullerton

Background:

FLY, the Houston, Texas-based dance company blending street dance with contemporary choreographic principles, makes its Orange County debut for one night only as part of its first California tour.

FLY’s technique—gymnastic, creative and highly masculine—takes the novel movement vocabulary of street, hip-hop. house and break dancing and combines it with the logical progressions of choreographic presentation to create a visual spectacle at turns comic, serious and always fresh. The four male dancers perform to a variety of sounds and music, including classical, jazz, pop, hip-hop, experimental, drumming and live sound effects. The Propellerheads, Bizet, James Brown, Vivaldi, Michael Jackson, The Flamingos, Nat King Cole and the Kodo Drummers are a few of the artists and composers whose works FLY brings to life on stage.

FLY Dance Company is in residence at Houston Community College under the direction of choreographer Kathy Wood. Since its inception 10 years ago FLY has toured extensively throughout the United States with trips to Mexico and Europe. Upcoming in the current season is a ten-performance engagement at the Kennedy Center in Washington and over 50 concerts in 20 states.

“The dancers are all-male and completely urban, and they know how to sashay and hip-hop and muscle themselves across the floor like no la-di-da ballerina can” — The Houston Press
