At left: Son
Kim Vo, her father, Vo Van Pham, 72, her husband, Le Van Vien
(a former commanding officer of the Medical Depot in the delta
region), and one hundred and thirty-three other refugees jammed
in a fishing boat to escape from Vietnam. They landed in Pulau
Bidong Refugee Camp, Malaysia where Son Kim Vo was the camp
leader in June 1981.
At right: Ms. Vo needed a dress for the occasion,
but did not have one, due to the poor conditions within the
camp. Miraculously, one day while her husband was out chopping
bamboo for cooking, he found a yellow dress for her. Son Kim
Vo is presently coordinator of the Intercultural Development
Center at CSUF. |
