Author to Discuss ‘Blue Notes in Black and White’ Book

What: Benjamin Cawthra, author of the recently published “Blue Notes in Black and White: Photography and Jazz” and associate professor of history at Cal State Fullerton, will discuss his book during a free presentation on campus that is open to the public.

Additional: Cawthra is associate director of the university's Center for Oral and Public History. His book introduces jazz photographers — including Gjon Mili, William Gottlieb, Herman Leonard, Francis Wolff, Roy DeCarava and William Claxton — and their struggles, styles and creative visions of their famous subjects, including jazz legends Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Billie Holiday. Cawthra will explain how and why the photographs were produced and what their significance is in American history. “My book is about African Americans achieving visibility, and about what jazz has meant and can mean,” Cawthra said.
Upcoming: Cawthra also is scheduled to speak locally at 6 p.m. March 2, as part of the Fullerton Art Walk, at the Violethour Studio and Gallery, 225 W. Santa Fe Ave. in Fullerton.
