Screening Brazilian Films

Three Movies Featured at CSUF Film Festival

What:     
In an effort to boost interest in studying and conducting research in Brazil, Cal State Fullerton’s Latin American Studies Program and Amigos Do Brasil are screening three films beginning with “Tropa de Elite” on Monday, Feb. 13. All films begin at 5 p.m. followed by discussion.

Schedule:     
Feb. 13 — “Tropa de Elite,” an award-winning film about police brutality. Leading the discussion will be João Barros, assistant professor of kinesiology.
Feb. 27 — “Besouro,” a film based on a 1924 murder, follows the lives of Capoeira fighters. Philippe Zacaïr, assistant professor of history, will lead the discussion.
March 5 — “Central Station,” a Golden Globe winner for Best Foreign Language Film, is about a boy’s search for his father and an old woman’s emotional reawakening. Paulo Simoes, lecturer in the University Honors Program, will lead the film discussion.

Why:      
“We are using the film series to expose students to Brazilian culture, to show the cinematic accomplishments of Brazilian films, and to have discussions on social issues, which ultimately should concern all humans,” said Sandra M. Perez-Linggi, associate professor of modern languages and literatures.

Parking:      
$2 per hour or $8 for a daily permit. Details are available online.
