Cal State Fullerton benefactor Michael Potter will present his 2008 award-winning documentary, “Orphans of Apollo,” Nov. 18 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
Potter directed the film, which tells the true story of MirCorp, a group of audacious space entrepreneurs who succeeded briefly in commandeering and operating the Russian space station Mir as a business venture, thereby launching the commercial space industry. Potter will be joined by university alumni who live and work in Washington, D.C., for the free screening and panel discussion. Tickets are required and may be obtained by visiting http://www.nasm.si.edu/events/eventDetail.cfm?eventID=3326.
Potter and his wife, alumna Margaret McCarthy (B.A. political science '84), owner of Paradigm Ventures LLC, are long-term supporters of the Washington, D.C., Scholars program since its inception in 2006.
Nineteen students inaugurated the 10-week summer internship program, and 31 students enrolled this past summer. Many of the students are offered scholarships to be able to take part in the program, thanks to support from McCarthy, Potter and others.
“Over the years, I have discovered that if you give students an opportunity, it opens doors for them down the line,” McCarthy said. “When I was a student, I had those kinds of opportunities, so I like to be able to provide that kind of support to students at Cal State Fullerton.”
