Background: |
During the fall semester, 80 Cal State Fullerton
students, as part of a service-learning course, visited Ruby
Drive Elementary in Placentia, Hurley Elementary in La Puente
and the Anaheim Achieves after-school program to teach children
about the legacy and heroism of the late Cesar Chavez, founder
of the United Farm Workers. The students also participated in
exercises to identify local heroes in their community and everyday
life. |
|
|
Service: |
This month, the students are designing six
service projects as part of the program, including crafting
blankets to give to the homeless, participating in a cleanup
of reserve lands in the Newport Back Bay area and visiting
the Easter Seals Senior Day Care Center to spend time with
seniors. The project is a program of the university’s
Center for Community Service-Learning.
“The project not only focuses on the life and legacy
of Cesar Chavez, but it helps to build a sense of community
by supporting the interaction between elementary school children,
college students and the local community service agencies,”
explained Sabrina Aris-Guentz, coordinator of the Cesar Chavez
Heroes Project. “It provides an avenue for people of
all ages to become heroes by giving of themselves to serve
others.” |
