Cal State Fullerton will begin its
fall semester of classes Saturday on a higher step on the
ladder of “America’s Best Colleges.”
Cal State Fullerton moved up to 6th —
from 9th — in the U.S. News & World Report’s
annual “Top Public Universities-Master’s”
in the West ranking. It shares that position with Sonoma State
University. This category highlights public institutions that
award master’s and bachelor’s degrees, but few,
if any, doctorates. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo again tops the
list, which is set for publication in the magazine’s
Aug. 29 edition.
“This is recognition not only for Cal
State Fullerton’s extraordinary faculty members and
the high quality of their teaching and mentoring in our classrooms,
laboratories and studios, but also for our outstanding academic
and student support programs, which enable our students to
achieve their degrees,” said CSUF President Milton A.
Gordon.
The ranking is part of a series of tallies
published under the heading “America’s Best Colleges”
and based on a variety of characteristics, including peer
assessment among academics, graduation and freshman retention
rates, faculty and financial resources, student selectivity
and alumni giving.
Among the CSUF statistics cited is an average
freshman retention rate of 80 percent.
The magazine’s much-publicized list of
the nation’s top 50 colleges includes only those with
doctoral programs. As it did last year, US News &
World Report again ranks Harvard and Princeton at the
top, sharing the No. 1 spot, with Yale at No.3.
