Cal State Fullerton Debate Team to Be Featured on College Sports Television

August 30, 2004 :: No. 28

Cal State Fullerton debate team members Josh Clark and Cameron Ward, both of Fullerton, will be among the debaters featured Wednesday, Sept. 1, on College Sports Television (CSTV), beginning at 5 p.m.

The one-hour documentary on this spring’s National Collegiate Debate Championship in Washington, D.C., will show the hard work and intensity of debate competition at this level. In Fullerton, CSTV is Channel 124.

Seniors Clark and Ward made it to the final eight of the championship — the highest placement that a Cal State Fullerton team has ever achieved at this tournament. The pair was defeated by Michigan State, which went on to capture first-place honors. In total, 78 teams competed in the national tournament.

The Cal State Fullerton team is co-directed by Jon Bruschke and Jeanine Congalton, associate professors of human communication. Assistant coach Adam Symonds, who graduated in January with a master’s degree in speech communication, was selected to help judge the final round of the tournament and was recognized as regional “Judge of the Year.” In addition to Symonds, the squad is assisted by graduate students Collette Blumer, Carrie Hyde, Jenn Quinn, Kathleen Conway and Luke Winslow.
