Bond Measure Slated for March

On March 2, California citizens will have the opportunity to vote on Proposition 55: the 2004 School Bond.

If Proposition 55 is approved by voters, classrooms in elementary and high schools, community colleges and universities would be built, renovated and enhanced.

The bond would provide $12.2 billion for the state’s educational systems in 2004-05 and 2005-06, including $9.9 billion for K-12, $920 million for the California Community Colleges, $690 million for the University of California and $690 million for the California State University.

Cal State Fullerton would receive more than $50 million under the proposition – $47.4 million to construct and equip a new College of Business and Economics building, as well as $3.5 million to furnish and equip the new Performing Arts Center currently under construction.
Proposition 55 is the companion measure to Proposition 47, passed in 2002. As a result of its passage, Cal State Fullerton received funding for fire and elevator safety projects, telecommunications upgrades and equipment for the new Kinesiology and Health Science Building.

Proposition supporters include League of Women Voters of California, Congress of California Seniors, Californians for Higher Education, California State PTA and California Teachers Association.

There is no organized opposition at this time.
