Cal State Fullerton Engineers to Host German Students and Faculty Members

What: A delegation of 18 mechanical engineering students and two faculty members from one of the foremost technical institutions of higher learning in Europe will visit Cal State Fullerton this week. Their journey here is the latest effort stemming from an educational partnership between CSUF and Germany’s Fachhochschule Karlsruhe, University of Applied Sciences.

When: Wednesday, Oct. 15 – Friday, Oct. 17

Where: The German visitors are scheduled to meet with CSUF mechanical engineering students and faculty members on campus to explore the possibility of a collaborative design project involving students from both institutions. In addition, the Fullerton hosts have arranged a series of regional tours. Their itinerary includes the Customer Technology Application Center of Southern California Edison in Irwindale, Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Universal Studios.

Background: Earlier this year, engineering professor Jesa Kreiner, who chairs CSUF’s Engineering Division, gave a seminar at Fachhochschule Karlsruhe, which is located next to the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg. Kreiner arranged for Sundaram Krishnamurthy, acting department head and professor of mechanical engineering, to spend the spring semester at the German institution, where he taught computer-aided design as a visiting professor and interacted with CSUF students via the Internet. “Lots of engineering design work has gone global,” noted Krishamurthy, adding that such international educational partnerships allow “students to gain real-world experience in a global context.”
