Cal State Fullerton Emeritus Professor Bernard Hyink Dies

Bernard L. Hyink, retired professor of political science and director of the Center for Internships and Cooperative Education, emeritus, at Cal State Fullerton, died June 24. The Fullerton resident was 91 years old.

He joined the Cal State Fullerton faculty in 1960 — the first year classes were held on the campus’s permanent site — and a decade later served for two years as president of California State University, Sacramento.

Hyink returned to CSUF in 1973 to teach and also launched the Center for Internships and Cooperative Education that same year, serving as its inaugural director. The center was the first of its kind on the West Coast.

He also served as president of the Cooperative Education & Internship Association from 1980-81 and was president of the CSUF Emeriti Association from 1984-85. He retired in 1981.

Hyink co-authored the widely used textbook “Politics and Government in California,” first published in 1959 with co-authors Seyom Brown and Ernest W. Thacker. The latest edition was published this year with co-author David Provost, professor of political science at Fresno State.

During the 1940s, Hyink frequently was called upon for assignments with the federal and state governments. He also served as a professor at the University of Tehran in 1956. Hyink received his B.A. from the University of Redlands, his M.A. from UC Berkeley and Ph.D. from USC.

He is survived by his wife, June, of Fullerton; two daughters, Shirley Kramer of Washington, D.C., and Barbara Hyink of Carlsbad; a brother, Donald, of Glendale; and two grandchildren.
