Latino Notebook: Hispanic veterans in Orange County and a longtime UCI educator are celebrated.
Scholarship set up in Juan Francisco Lara's name.

VETERANS: Two events take place this weekend, focusing on the contributions of Latino veterans.

•A tribute to Mexican American veterans of the Korean War will take place on Saturday at Cal State Fullerton, hosted by the school and Latino Advocates for Education.

The free event takes place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Titan Student Union.

At the ceremony an event book will be distributed, profiling Latinos who served in the Korean War.

•The Orange County Mexican American Historical Society will also celebrate veterans on Saturday.

The free event will feature guest speaker Sam Romero, food, music and a photo display.

It takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Delhi Community Center, 505 E. Central Ave., Santa Ana.

MILESTONE: A retirement reception celebrating the career of Dr. Juan Francisco Lara will take place Nov. 15.

Lara has worked for the University of California for more than 35 years, most recently as assistant vice chancellor, enrollment services, at UC Irvine. He came to UCI in 1990 and retired in June.

The event takes place from 4-6:30 p.m. in the Pacific Ballroom, UCI Student Center. A scholarship fund has been set up in Lara's honor.
