Poly ties, so it won’t play host
Mustangs miss out on chance to host the Big West Tournament

Cal Poly’s women’s soccer team tied Cal State Northridge 1-1 Sunday, putting the Mustangs in third place heading into next weekend’s Big West Conference Tournament.

The conference tournament will be hosted at Cal State Fullerton—had the Mustangs won Sunday’s match against the Matadors, the tournament would’ve been at Cal Poly.

Cal Poly (7-9-2, 5-2-1 Big West) will be the third seed for the Big West Tournament and will play No. 2 Long Beach State in the first round Friday. The winner of that match plays the winner of No. 1 Cal State Fullerton and No. 4 UC Irvine for the championship Sunday.

The winner of the conference tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In Sunday’s match, Cal State Northridge (5-10-3, 2-4-2) got on the board first as Kristy Krohn put one past Cal Poly keeper Alli Tramel in the 65th minute. Krohn headed the ball into the goal off of a cross by Tryna Tafoya.

Kaleena Andruss took a free kick in the 66th minute and found Julianne Grinstead, who struck the ball past Cal State Northridge’s keeper to tie it up.

The Matadors outshot the Mustangs 17-12. Tramel made seven saves while Cal State Northridge’s Ivette Esqueda had three.
