Sciencedude: ‘Telescope on the Moon’ talk set for Chapman

Gary Robbins

There are several interesting science talks scheduled for this week. The one that piques my interest most is the lecture that astrophysicist Edward Rhodes Jr. will give on Friday, Nov. 9, at Chapman University about placing small solar telescopes on the moon. Rhodes, who teaches at USC, says a portable telescope could be set up by visiting astronauts. His lecture is part of the monthly Orange County Astronomers club meeting, which is held in Irvine Hall. You’re invited.

Earlier in the week – on Wednesday, Nov. 7 – award-winning astrophysicist Adam Riess of the Space Telescope Science Institute (the Hubble people) will talk about supernovae when he visits UC Irvine’s Calit2 at 3:30 p.m. Calit2 is the large building next to Bren Hall on Ring Road.

Nov. 7 also is the date of Bob Pierotti’s talk about the Southern California water crisis. Pierotti, who works for the California Department of Water Resources, will give his talk at 4:30 p.m. in Room 327 of McCarthy Hall at Cal State Fullerton.
