Holy Names 2, Vanguard 1 (2 OT)

OAKLAND — The host Hawks outshot the Lions, 19-4, but needed two overtimes to earn the victory in the first round of the NAIA Region II playoffs Thursday.

Freshman Scott Falkner scored with an assist from senior Sem Lopez for the Lions (9-7), who received five saves from freshman goalie Trevor Herrera.

Holy Names goalie Andreas Lindstrom made just one save to help the Hawks (14-2-2) advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

Both teams had nine corner kicks, while Vanguard was whistled for being offsides eight times, Holy Names none.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Fullerton 1, UC Irvine 0

FULLERTON — Stacey Thompson scored in the 80th minute for the Titans in the Big West Conference game Thursday night.

The win clinched a berth in the four-team Big West Tournament for the Titans (11-6-1, 6-2 in conference).

UCI (10-6-2, 4-2-1) remains in third place with 13 points (three points for a win and one for a tie), one point ahead of Long Beach State (4-2 in conference), which plays host to second-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (5-1) today.

The regular-season concludes Sunday, when UCI plays host to UC Riverside (2-4-1) and UCSB (3-2-1) visits Long Beach State.

Freshman goalie Danielle de Seriere had three saves for UCI, which had 10 shots to the Titans’ six.
