UCLA women's soccer advances to third round
Daily News
Danesha Adams scored two goals and Lauren Cheney returned from a one-game suspension to score a goal to lead the top-ranked UCLA women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory Sunday over Oklahoma State in the second round of the NCAA tournament at Drake Stadium.
UCLA (18-1-2), which advances to the third round for the ninth straight season, will play Virginia on Friday at Drake Stadium.
Cheney, who scored her team-leading 21st goal of the season less than five minutes into the game, sat out the Bruins' first playoff game Friday against Cal State Fullerton because she was ejected in UCLA's regular-season finale.
"I was just excited to be back with the team," Cheney said. "It was hard watching from the sidelines."
The Bruins held off a strong offensive surge by Oklahoma State (14-6-3) late in the first half and countered early in the second half with a goal from Adams, assisted by McCall Zerboni and Cheney, to take a 2-0 lead.
"I thought we were much better in the second half," UCLA coach Jillian Ellis said. "I think we fell off the boat a little bit after the first goal because we got it so quickly, but we opened up things in the second half and moved on."
