Homeless children reach higher at Cal State Fullerton
University stresses goal setting for a higher education.
By BARBARA GIASONE
FULLERTON Homeless children had a taste of goal setting Friday when Cal State Fullerton hosted a program focused on achieving a higher education.
The daylong event was part of the Hunger & Homelessness Week at the university.
The 21 children, who were transported from Project Hope in Orange, were assisted by 42 CSF volunteers.
Activities included a tour of the campus, lunch and bowling. The elementary-to-middle-school guests also met faculty members and learned about theater arts, speech, debate and other subjects.
CSF Junior Dora Hernandez, a communicative-disorders major, was among volunteers to hold cardboard signs of statistics, facts, images and quotes designed to debunk stereotypes about homeless people in Orange County and elsewhere.
Hernandez is a project director for the university's Volunteer & Service Center's Hunger Coalition.
