PCC honors Shapiro, wins

From Staff Reports

PASADENA - The Pasadena City College women's basketball team honored late teammate Reia Shapiro by retiring her No. 21 jersey before its season opener Friday night.

The Lancers managed to channel their emotions following a tearful ceremony and went on to defeat Taft 69-51 in the first round of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic at PCC's Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

Shapiro, a member of last year's 34-2 team that advanced to the state semifinals, was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Sept. 30. At the pregame ceremony, Shapiro's three older sisters accepted a framed jersey worn by Reia from PCC coach Joe Peron.

Center Florence Wilson, who was a teammate of Shapiro's last season, led PCC's victory with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Wilson was 7-for-10 from the floor.

Sophomore transfer guard Anna Magganas, a bounce-back from Cal State Fullerton, also scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had three assists.

PCC freshman guard Melia Basavand made five 3-pointers for all 15 of her points.
