College Roundup: Poly to vie for soccer title

The Cal Poly women’s soccer team continued its push for another title at the Big West Conference Tournament.

The No. 3 seed Mustangs advanced to Sunday’s final after defeating No. 2 Long Beach State 2-1 in Fullerton on Friday night.

“We did a good job defending and had two good, quality goals,” Cal Poly head coach Alex Crozier said.

The semifinals have been special for Cal Poly: the team has advanced to the finals in six of six attempts. Those appearances have translated into three tournament wins, with the most recent coming in 2004.

Since then, Cal State Fullerton has won back-to-back tournament titles and earned the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The Titans will look to make it three consecutive tournament titles after advancing to the final following a 2-1 overtime win over UC Irvine on Friday night.

Cal Poly faces top-seed Cal State Fullerton at 1 p.m.

Despite being outshot 21-3, Cal Poly (13-7) left with the win thanks to goals from Ashley Vallis and Carissa Voegele.

After a scoreless first half, Vallis scored in the 53rd minute off a cross by Monica Hemenez. Voegele provided the Mustangs with a two-goal cushion, scoring 19 minutes later off an assist by Sharon Day.

Long Beach State (8-9-2) received its lone goal in the 83rd minute by Lindsay Bullock.

• Cuesta 15, Cerritos 8: The Cougars moved one step closer to the state playoffs following their win at the Southern California playoffs at Huntington Beach.

Brian Buhagiar scored a teamhigh five goals and Craig Erickson added three for the Cougars (26-8). Eric Cavanaugh and Trevor Frimond both had two goals.

Cuesta jumped to a 6-3 lead after the first quarter and built it to 9-5 at the half.

Four more goals in the third quarter provided Cuesta all the breathing room it needed to cruise to the victory.

Riley Warner had eight saves in goal for Cuesta.

Cuesta can advance to the state playoffs if it can pull off a win today against No. 2 seed Long Beach, which happens to be the defending state champions.

Last year in the state tournament, Cuesta finished third.

• Cerritos 8, Cuesta 7: The Cougars traded two goals apiece in the third and fourth quarters but gave up the winning score in overtime, bringing their season to an end at the Southern California playoffs at Golden West College.

Whitney Levicki scored a teamhigh five goals for the Cougars (22-10), who were without starting driver Laura Oneto after she received a red card in the team’s previous contest.

Emily Millard made 13 saves in goal for Cuesta.

Led by Stephanie Rosero, who netted three goals, a deep Cerritos squad received a scoring contribution from five other players.
