NEIGHBORHOOD SCAN: Locally bred plant makes debut
ARBORETUM
Evie Tyra of Anaheim, nursery manager for the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum, premiered the new Aristolochia hybrid she developed for the Fullerton Arboretum.
The second hybrid introduced by the friends in the past year went on sale to the public Nov. 3 in The Potting Shed. Quantities are limited initially on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The new evergreen flowering vine features an unusual flower shape with a deep, velvety merlot color. The vines are mostly found in the Americas, and prefer full sun to part shade. The plant blooms from late spring through late fall.
Aristolochias also respond well in low light conditions, and can be grown indoors. They tolerate high humidity or arid climates with little rain, although irrigation should be provided.
The species are host plants for the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly that is found throughout California.
The Fullerton Arboretum is at 1900 Associated Road.
CAL STATE
In the 50th anniversary commemorative issue of the Cal State Fullerton Titan Magazine, Editor Cathi Douglas salutes alumni through the years.
John Roth, Classes of 1968 and 1972, is in his third term as commission chair of the Riverside County Planning Commission.
Douglas writes that Roth retired as an engineering manager in 1999 from Boeing after 30 years of service.
His family is in its third generation at CSF. Grandson Brendan is currently enrolled in political science and plans to graduate in 2009. Daughter Rachel Roth-Dominguez, Class of 1997, studied business administration finance, and his granddaughter, Marissa, Class of 2006, majored in liberal studies.COLLEGE PARK
The North Orange County Community College Board has contracted with Community College Search Services to start the recruitment for a new chancellor to succeed Jerome Hunter, who will retire in summer 2008.
At Fullerton College, the Police Academy Class 33 is conducting a food drive to help families in need during the Thanksgiving season. A collection bin will be placed in front of the Administration of Justice office: Room 730.
Two of FC's music professors have been nominated for Grammy Awards. James Linahon's name is in two categories: Best Engineered Album and Best Jazz Instrumental while Joe Jewell is up for Best Instrumental Arrangement and Best Jazz Album in Individual or Group.
A new program on the college's radio station, 90.1 FM KBPK, will focus on business and the economy. "California Commerce" can be heard every Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
FC economic professor Arienne Turner was the first guest on the show, while longtime Orange County restaurateur Bernie Gordon was in the spotlight on Nov. 4.
DEERPARK DRIVE
Troy High School student Matt Thornburgh and his principal, Maggie Buchan, rose early last month for the 7:15 a.m. Fullerton Sunrise Rotary meeting at the Meridian Club.
Thornburgh was honored as the club's Student of the Month. Dane Ilertsen, resource teacher and baseball coach at Troy, received Teacher of the Month kudos.
Ilertsen said he liked coming to work because of students like Thornburgh. He said his student was involved in the special education section yearbook.
"Matt has great abilities," Ilertsen said, prompting Thornburgh to display a big smile.
DOROTHY LANE
Morningside Presbyterian Church has announced Robert McLaren has a new book, "Religious Foundation for Global Ethics," on local bookshelves.
The edition can be purchased at the Cal State Fullerton Bookstore or at Barnes & Noble.
Church members are also touting the multi-colored banners in the parking lot that were made, installed and donated by Gary Park, chairman of the Evangelism and Fellowship Committee.
The banners carry inviting messages to increase church membership.
LAGUNA ROAD
Amid planning for fall fundraising activities, Ebell Club of Fullerton members interjected a little fun into their October meeting. Members were asked to vote for the most influential women in the United States.
The winners, according to Chairwoman Flora Carlberg, were Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Florence Nightingale, Amelia Earhart and Jackie Kennedy.
Then it was back to selecting committees for the Brea Mall Simon Evening of Giving on Nov. 18 and the Festival of Trees slated for Dec. 8.
Discounted holiday shopping in an uncrowded environment will welcome "Evening of Giving" participants, according to Chairwoman Beverly Nihei. The club will get $7 for every $10 ticket sold.
Mary Sprague and Susan Hillman are coordinating the "Festival of Trees" for the clubhouse when members and guests can bid on decorated Christmas trees.
And Ebell newsletter editor Louise Moothart added a handy hint for the membership. She learned Kool Aid cleans dishwasher pipes and cleans toilets.
"Just put in the detergent section of the dishwasher and run a cycle," she writes.
