Late goal protects Poly’s win streak

Sharon Day’s goal in the 102nd minute gave the Cal Poly women’s soccer team its sixth straight win as the Mustangs topped Pacific 1-0 in the second overtime period on Senior Day at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sunday.

Day took a pass on the left, dribbled into the box and drove a shot on the ground to the right, just out of the reach of Pacific goalkeeper Jaime Souza. The ball hit the inside of the post and deflected into the net.

Cal Poly (7-8-1, 5-1 Big West Conference) has won five straight Big West contests, each by a score of 1-0, and has won its past six overall. The Mustangs have allowed just two goals in conference play, both in a loss to UC Riverside on Oct. 5.

The Mustangs dominated most of the match, taking 35 shots to Pacific’s seven. Souza had a

busy day in goal for the Tigers with 16 saves. Alli Tramel recorded her seventh shutout for the Mustangs and recorded three saves.

Cal Poly also held a significant edge in corner kicks with 11 to Pacific’s two.

Pacific (6-7-4, 1-5-2) nearly scored midway through the first half. Mandi Van Dorn chipped a shot over Tramel, who had come off her line to contest Van Dorn, and the ball got to the goal line before being knocked away by Cal Poly’s Erica Leger.

Cal Poly will play at Long Beach State at 2 p.m. Friday in a key Big West match. Long Beach State entered Sunday tied atop the conference standings with Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton with 12 points apiece.
