Soroptimist group to help women students


Soroptimist International of Fullerton is seeking applications from head of household women who need assistance with schooling expenses.


The group’s Women’s Opportunity Award Program provides $1,000 in scholarships.


The Fullerton chapter, which is celebrating its 52nd year in Fullerton, is a nonprofit organization for business and professional women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls locally and throughout the world.

Presbyterian church has special speaker


The Rev. Howard Rice, former chaplain of the San Francisco Theological Seminary, will preach at the First Presbyterian Church of Fullerton at 8:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. on Sunday. (Oct. 28).


The morning sermon will follow the lectionary, “Humility: The Hard Way.”


An afternoon presentation, “A New Reformation: The 10 Dangerous Excesses of the Protestant Reformation,” will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.

Leslie Lyons visits the Probus Club


Leslie Lyons, a member of the board of the Tournament of Roses, is scheduled to visit the Nov. 1 noon luncheon of the Probus Club at the Ebell Club of Fullerton. Lyons will give a speech about an overview of the Rose Parade and include experiences from her 16 years as a Tournament of Roses member. For more information, call Hal Koenig at 714-526-3491.


Tour of Redlands library is planned


Patrons of the library at Cal State Fullerton and guests have been invited to a private tour of the A.K. Smiley Library in Redlands on Nov. 8.


The facility is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The original 1898 building has been expanded to accommodate a 33,000-squarefoot addition. There is also a conservatory reading room and two outdoor garden areas.


The library is also home to the Lincoln Memorial Shrine, the only museum and archives west of the Mississippi River dedicated to the study of Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War.


A chartered bus will transport members and guests to the library. Following the morning tour, participants will have lunch at the Tartan Restaurant before returning to the CSF campus at 3 p.m. The cost of the field trip is $30 per person and covers transportation only. Holiday crafts on sale Saturday


The First Christian Church will stage its 38th annual Holiday Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Wilshire Avenue. Free childcare will be available until noon. Lunch will also be available. Information: 714-525-5525.


Looking for Miss Fullerton 2008


The Miss Fullerton and Fullerton Outstanding Teen programs are accepting applications for the 2008 competition. Entrants for the Miss Fullerton program must be between ages 17 – a senior in high school – and 24, and must work, live or attend school in the city.


Teen contestants must be between 13 and 16, and will compete in a personal interview, talent, lifestyle and fitness, evening wear and onstage questions.
